What is Interior Design, do we really even need it?

As human beings functionality is a pretty important aspect of our lives. We tend to overlook it when it comes to our homes but an unsatisfactory floor plan can affect the way we function in a house. An interior Designers job is not about picking pretty colours, choosing pillow cases or if your tile matches the cabinets in your kitchen. We are often under appreciated for the real work we put in (which I am sure happens in many professions). We Interior Designers take care of the movement, flow and journey of the space which includes obviously layouts, furniture, colours, lights, acoustics, etc.

There is much to think about when designing a space. The perspective changes when it is commercial space or a private home. Eventually all the design and hard work that is put in must be approved by the client and therefore several options must be displayed.

So considering the fact that if furniture or objects are wrongfully put in place we can easily bump into them and can cause and obstruction to our everyday movement throughout the house or even unused spaces that do not have a function and simply are abandoned. These are things we necessarily do not think about in our everyday lives but have an effect on the way we function.
“Understanding the person or people living in a home is a far greater need in design than focusing purely on the aesthetics. The home is designed around emotional needs.”
-Amanda Talbot, Rethink: The Way You Live
